Character

Name: Hibiki (Ethan)
Fandom: Pokemon [HeartGold/SoulSilver] Gameverse
Gender: male
Age: 13
Time Period: Pre-Kanto League
Wing Color: goldenrod
History: HGSS
Personality:
His only family is his mother--his father is long gone--but he was raised with a lot of love and affection, from people and pokemon. Because of that, Hibiki grew up into a kind, caring boy who enjoys physical contact; be it a pat on the back, a hug, or a kiss, it makes him happy. He has no problem going up to a person, talking to them, helping them, befriending them. He makes friends easily, even with trainers he's defeated, exchanging phone numbers with them and keeping in contact. And tolerating little bastards like Youngster Joey. It is the same with pokemon; he bonded with his Cyndaquil in a very short amount of time (which also allowed him to keep it as his starter). Every so often he challenges the same trainers again to see how much they've improved and just to see them again. He does the same thing with gym leaders and the elite four; he has their numbers and they talk every once in a while. Hibiki believes he still has a lot to learn and who's better to learn from than those people that went on to become gym leaders and part of the elite four? That and they give really good advice on how to train, where to go, shortcuts; recommend some good places in town, etc. (They kinda look out for him and Hibiki looks up to all of them.) Plus who else can say they have gym leaders' numbers? Hibiki, that's who.

Hibiki enjoys meeting new people, especially kids his age. He doesn't have any siblings or anyone he's particularly close to which makes him want to form close bonds with people. Aware of his goal, he doesn't have a lot of time to get close to anyone, but it doesn't bother him too much because he has his pokemon--they're his second family, really. He doesn't get lonely very often, but there are moments he feels like he made the wrong choice in starting a pokemon journey--there are a lot of families in the small towns his visits and it makes him wonder if that would've been him laughing and playing with other kids if he stayed. He travels alone, with the exception of his pokemon companion (usually Typlosion), so he gets very excited when he finds trainers or people on the road; he talks to everybody about anything and everything. Hibiki doesn't dwell on things, though, he accepts his situation for what is its. He's a momma's boy at heart, not getting irritated with the phone calls (and her spending all his money on berries), he loves his mom.

Hibiki takes his time going from town to town, meeting new people and pokemon, being friendly in general. He helps anyone that he comes across--an example being his time in Azalea Town, also his first encounter with Team Rocket. He hears the townspeople have been having problems with Team Rocket and confronts them, battling grunt after grunt to save the slowpoke in the well and driving them out of the town. He encounters them multiple times (lake of rage, goldenrod, cerulean) and goes out of his way to stop them. Hibiki goes even as far as infiltrating the dangerous organization--alone--in hopes of ending their operations. He seeks them out and sends them away before they create chaos. Hibiki doesn't see them as a distraction nor as an obstruction to his goal, but as an organization he needs to stop. He was taught to do what was right and to help others, he wants to do what's right and help others. He grew up helping Professor Elm around his lab--running errands and destroying evil organizations are pretty much the same in his book. Aside from helping people from Team Rocket, he helped Jasmine of Olivine City nurse her ill Ampharos back to health. Hibiki did not know who she was until after he finds the medicine to help her, showing how quick he is on deciding who to help. The feeling he gets after helping someone is priceless, and he's happy to do anything he can on his journey. And it doesn't even matter if it's a person, [wild] pokemon, even berry plants that need watering, Hibiki would find a way to do something for each of them.

Despite taking his time getting from place to place, Hibiki is full of energy. He loves running--to feel the wind against his face and all the built up adrenaline. Depending on whichever pokemon he has out with him, Hibiki races them and just plays around with them in between gyms. Aside from running, Hibiki loves riding his bike. It gives him the same feeling as running, only biking is much faster. (And sometimes he hears a voice in his head telling him not to ride it [especially in pokemon centers]--it freaks him out.) He's very energetic and very very active, bringing excitement everywhere he goes. Hibiki's also brave--what preteen wanders around dark caves, and woods at night? He acts mostly on instinct and that's how he survives in the wilderness. If things get out of hand, he knows to use his pokemon to help him get out of the situation, but most of the time he can befriend the wild pokemon or whatever he encounters out there.

His rival is a boy named Silver, whom he first encountered when he received his starter pokemon. Every time Silver challenges Hibiki, it's obvious what Silver is driven by (strength, being the strongest, pushing his pokemon, etc.), but Hibiki doesn't get angry at him for treating his pokemon like that, nor does he look down upon the other. Instead, each time they meet, he tries to help Silver. Help him see that not everybody is weak, that his pokemon aren't just tools, that strength isn't the only thing that matters. Silver berates him every battle, believing he's weak--You stay out of my way. A weakling like you is only a distraction--but it doesn't faze Hibiki. He's not the type to give up when things don't look good, and he never gave up on trying to help Silver see pokemon in a different light. Eventually Silver changes for the better and when they battle in Victory Road, he acknowledges Hibiki's strength and vows to battle him again.

He's seldom anything but happy because he just doesn't have a reason to be anything else. He's on an adventure; his first, now technically second in Kanto, and it's the most amazing thing in the world. There are things that bring his mood down (like when it rains and he can't go out, boo) and things that make him mad (cough team rocket), but he doesn't let it bother him. He's happy when other people are happy, when his pokemon are happy, when the weather is nice, when he wins..etc. If no one's happy, he'd be happy for them, after all, he doesn't think anyone should feel sad if they don't have to.

His will is strong, and reflects in his battles. Along with dealing with Team Rocket, he encounters a fair share of wild pokemon and challengers along the way to each city. Hibiki doesn't step into a battle knowing he's going to win, he trusts his pokemon and believes their strength (as well as his determination) can snag victory. His bond with his pokemon is what helps him win; said bond is acknowledged early on in the game when Professor Elm deems him fit to have a pokemon of his own and to start his pokemon adventure and later when Professor Oak gives him a pokedex. All ups have downs, however, and Hibiki doesn't win all the time. He accepts defeat with grace and trains harder to become stronger. It isn't in him to feel bitter about a loss or give up when it's a particularly bad defeat. Although in some cases, he will become distressed over defeat (and pretty much wallow in self-pity). He cares for each and every one of his pokemon, them being his closest friends (and family), so he treats them as best he could. He nurses them back to health or rushes to the nearest Pokemon Center when they're hurt/poisoned/struck with a status ailment/etc--because they are his strength. It works the same way with his friends (wow typical shounen thing!!), he relies on them as much as they do him and would do anything for them. Not to mention fiercely loyal.

His dream is to become the pokemon champion, much like the mysterious Trainer Red (also a figure he looks up to--he is the current champion, after all). Hibiki used to watch pokemon battles on tv and that was when he knew what he wanted to do when he "grew up." Little kids often have strong figures they dub as their heroes, and it was the same for Hibiki. He was inspired by all the trainers he saw on tv, by how well trainer and pokemon worked and just fascinated by the pokemon in general. So he decided to go down the road of a trainer, to be just like the big kids on tv. And now he himself is on tv, courtesy of the traveling reporter he encounters in every other town. He's often praised for his skill and power, but it never gets to his head. Hibiki always responds with something positive when asked about his battles--they're thrilling and exciting, just what he wants from them. Training pokemon and battling is admittedly hard work (and sometimes frustrating if they're stuck in a rut), but he makes sure he, his pokemon and even his opponent can have fun. That's just how he is, he wants to be able to enjoy battles as much as he could and to share that joy with others as well.

Strengths::
  • Hibiki's extremely determined and doesn't stop until his goal is reached. His main goal currently is to become the champion of the Kanto region (having already won the title of champion from his native region), traveling to a different region and beating the gyms there. However, despite that main goal, he creates other goals along the way of his journey. In the Johto league, Hibiki accomplishes other things without getting off track. He comes across Team Rocket and is determined to stop them from committing crimes, at the same time continuing has path to the Pokemon League. Those two traits are often reflected in his battles, a trainer's confidence and determination affect how their pokemon do.
  • His ability to make friends is considered one of his bigger strengths, especially on his journey. Quite frequently, he battles trainers on the road and records their phone numbers; the same with gym leaders. He doesn't come off as a menacing kid and he's strong, making people attracted to him. That way, he creates less enemies for himself and sometimes gets a few free items out of it (ex. fishing rod(s), berries, potions..etc). Another pro of this is that the people he meets also help him strengthen his pokemon by challenging him for rematches. It's not always the case, but sometimes, like Youngster Joey, they call him just to give him and update on how they're doing. It shows that he's easy to talk to and that they want to talk to him.

    • Early on in the game, Hibiki befriends the champion of the Johto League, Lance and helps fight against Team Rocket.
    • Even his pokemon like him, often expressing signs of happiness when they're out of their balls (nudging him, jumping around, being excited)
  • In relation to the two above, he has a pure heart. In Pokemon Crystal, Ho-Oh's description is as follows, "It will reveal itself before a pure-hearted trainer by shining its bright rainbow-colored wings." When Hibiki reached Ecruteak City with the rainbow wing, Ho-Oh appears and challenges him to battle. A pure heart is his strength; "A heart free of possessiveness, a heart able to feel the sorrow of others, a heart that thirsts for what is right, a heart that is not vengeful." He goes after Team Rocket because he believes their purpose is wrong, and that motivates him to stop them in their tracks. Another example of this is how he behaves with his rival Silver. Despite disagreeing with the way he trains, Hibiki never shows any negative feelings towards him, instead he tries to help Silver see that the way he treats his pokemon isn't right. His pokemon follow him because of this, because this pure-hearted trainer can change things for the better.
  • Hibiki can adapt easily, what with being outside all the time in all sorts of weather with nothing but himself, his bag, and his pokemon. It allows him to continue on his journey without and hindrance from the weather when the seasons change.
Weaknesses:
  • Hibiki can be a little too headstrong and does things impulsively; jumping right into a team rocket hideout and getting all the grunts' attentions probably isn't a little too bright. Inside Team Rocket bases and areas they've infiltrated provide little opportunity to rest and heal since there are grunts everywhere. Because Hibiki goes right in, there's hardly time to rest since the grunts always spot him and immediately a battle is underway. He faces problems head-on, fully believing that he and his team can beat their opponent. Sometimes he overestimates his own power or underestimates his foes which leads to his defeat. He doesn't know every town or city, nor does he always know if there's a gym or what type it is, but his headstrong attitude prevents him from worrying about it. The Cerulean city gym, for example. It's easy to figure out what type of gym it is once you walk in, but before reaching Misty, there are several trainers in her gym that he has to defeat. There's a huge type disadvantage because he has Typhlosion and only one electric type in his party. Long story short, he's beaten for being decided to just go in and challenge the gym!
  • Despite being happy all the time, Hibiki does possess other emotions and they do affect the decisions he makes (ex. working his pokemon too hard out of anger/desperation). There are many caves in both regions, and usually they're dark and swarming with trainers and wild pokemon. Sometimes going through them, especially Victory Road, requires a create deal of patience and keeping a cool head to figure out where you are. His Victory Road experience, for example, was taxing on him and his pokemon. Because he wanted to get out of there as soon as possible (after being startled by trainers standing around in the dark and all the high leveled wild pokemon), he almost worked all his pokemon out by urging them to win and finish the battle quickly. (In the games, it caused him to "white out" and go to the pokemon center.) As a result, it took longer than necessary to get to the exit of the cave.
  • Hibiki hates being alone. He always has a pokemon out with him, usually Typhlosion, and it makes him feel safe. His pokemon help him see in dark caves and get past bodies of water, rocks, and small trees. Without them, he wouldn't be able to move forward. Rarely is he without someone with him (with the exception of riding his bike) so it's something he's used to. The same thing with people, if there weren't civilians around, he wouldn't be able to receive items like soothe bell that help his pokemon, or hear about swarms. He doesn't have to face the unknown, or when he does he, has company with him. It's different when he's alone because after everything, he's still just a 13 year old boy.

First Person:
Hello? Hellooooooo?

Hmph. The is really weird. This place doesn't look like any place in Johto or Kanto. [He peers around, a hand over his eyes to see if there were any familiar areas around. Like he could tell the difference between the trees here and the trees in Johto.] I wonder.....if this is a totally new and undiscovered part of the world!! Ah, this is so cool, wait til I tell the professor--oh and my mom! Boy, will she be surprised when she hears that her son discovered a brand new area. I wonder if they are new types of pokemon here......[There's a pause, and a long exhale.]

.."Here" being some place I don't know! Can I even get lost of I don't know where I am in the first place?! Every direction looks the same! [He cups his hands around his mouth.] Helloooooooo? Is anyone out there? Can you tell me where I am?

[Getting no response, he sighs. What were you expecting, boy?] I guess I'll just have to find out myself. Watch out unknown world, cause here I come!

Third Person:
He had wings. Wings. Given that they weren't grand, majestic wings like that of an Articuno--heck, they weren't even blue--they were still wings. Did he mention they were attached to his back? Little golden wings that stood out against his red hoodie. How peculiar.

He reached out and tentatively touched one of them. Soft. The feathers glimmered in the sunlight, reminding him of the bells from Bell Tower back in Ecruteak City. They were gold, like, well, gold. A bright gold, bright like the fire that reflected in his eyes during battle and happiness that shone on his face when he won. He didn't think much of the color, but he found that he could probably get used to it. He held a feather between his fingers, rubbing gently. Hibiki was letting this all sink in, it wasn't just his imagination. He wasn't in one of his dreams where he was a pokemon, flying in the skies with the Pidgeots, Fearows, and even Ho-Oh.

Retracting his hand, Hibiki tried to move them, slowly flapping them until he was able to propel himself forward a few inches. Unreal. That's what his first thought was. He was just a boy, not that special at all. How in the world did he get wings?! Did something happen for him to get them? Was he the only one, or did other people have wings too? Hibiki had questions, lots of them, but no answers. But he knew he was going to find them. And that meant a new adventure. A new start. A whole new world of people to meet. A grin spread across his face as he flapped his wings and moved forward.

To fall on his face. Right. Maybe he should start with walking first and then gradually ease into flying. Right.

At least they matched his hat.

Pokemon:
Typhlosion (brave nature): The pokemon that's been with Hibiki the longest, since the beginning of his journey. This guy's pretty much seen everything, since he's usually the one that Hibiki keeps out of the ball. Typhlosion looks out for his trainer in battle and out of battle, quick to react when he senses something coming towards them. The two have a close bond because of the time they spend together, occasionally play-fighting with each other on their way to the next town. Typhlosion can be a little overconfident in it's skill (almost like Ash's Charizard), but obeys Hibiki when told to stop or sit out of a battle. Because Typhlosion's a fire-type, he's weak to water, ground, and rock types; but strong against steel, grass, ice,  and bug.

Pidgeot (calm nature): One of the first pokemon Hibiki ever caught (since there are like five million wild pidgeys around New Park) and one of the most useful. Although used primarily to travel between cities/towns, Pidgeot is used every so often in battle. Like Typhlosion, Hibiki and Pidgeot have a pretty strong bond--ready to stand up for its trainer when called upon. Often times when Pidgeot is out with Hibiki, he tends to nudge the boy forward with its beak and bring back a number of jagged rocks.... Pidgeot's a flying type, making it strong against grass and bug types, while weak against electric, ice, and rock types.

Ampharos (jolly nature): Ampharos is one of his more...energetic pokemon. He's one of the powerhouses on Hibiki's team with its powerful electric attacks that leave opponents paralyzed. When out of it's ball, Ampharos likes to walk in front of Hibiki, wagging its tail. He likes to roam around and  play with the smaller, wild pokemon (since the rest of Hibiki's team is kind of bigger than him). An electric type pokemon, Ampharos is strong against flying types as well as steel types, but weak against ground types.
